Leeds United will never get a better chance to re-sign Fabian Delph.
The Daily Star claimed on July 30 that Leeds are keen on their former Thorp Arch product, who quit the Whites in 2009 to join Aston Villa.
But speculation has gone a little cold and there’s been little to no follow-up speculation since, which makes you wonder how credible the original report is.
Thing is, he’s genuinely there for the taking if Victor Orta wants him back at Elland Road.
That’s because Everton have just signed not one, but two, but three midfielders.
Abdoulaye Doucoure was announced as a Toffees player on Tuesday following weeks of speculation, following Allan and James Rodriguez to Goodison Park.
All of those three don’t play in the same midfield role, but Delph, a two-time Premier League champion with Manchester City, is capable of playing a numer of different positions in the middle of the park.
But the reality is that this treble deal means he is effectively surplus to requirements under Carlo Ancelotti, who wasn’t in charge when Delph was signed from the Etihad club.
Leeds have quite a few talented midfielders themselves – not to mention Kalvin Phillips, who made his England debut on Tuesday night – but director of football Orta definitely needs reinforcements, by virtue of the fact that the likes of Phillips, Mateusz Klich and Tyler Roberts have never played Premier League football before.
The Whites need an experienced head in midfield – and Delph, who earns £80,000 per week on Merseyside, looks far more available and accessible now than he did a couple of months ago.
This is a no-brainer for Leeds.
