A penny for the thoughts of Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Reds midfielder watched on from the bench for 90 minutes in this evening’s visit of Manchester United at Anfield.
And it’s a pretty damning indictment of how far he has fallen at Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp started Jordan Henderson in defence against the Red Devils and therefore needed a midfielder, to partner Thiago and Gini Wijnaldum.
But the German coach snubbed Oxlade-Chamberlain – a £40 million addition in 2017 – for Xherdan Shaqiri, who has spent most of his career as a wide player.
That was the first indication that the Liverpool boss no longer trusts the former Arsenal man.
But when Klopp took off Shaqiri, he picked 19-year-old Curtis Jones ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain, who struggled against Southampton in his last Premier League start.
And in the final few minutes, Oxlade-Chamberlain was overlooked again as James Milner – who turned 35 earlier this month – came on for Wijnaldum.
The England international is a fine player on his day, but injuries haven’t been kind to him at all during his three-and-a-half year stint on Merseyside.
There’s been flashes of brilliance, but the fact that Klopp named him on the bench and kept him there for 90 minutes illustrates he has little faith in Oxlade-Chamberlain these days.
