Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur both discovered their Europa League fates this afternoon.
Spurs were paired with Austrian outfit Wolfsberg in the last 32 of the competition, while their North London rivals were drawn alongside with Benfica.
And interestingly, it’s possible that a current Tottenham player could wind up facing Arsenal in the Gunners’ tie.
That’s because the Lilywhites look poised to tear up Gedson Fernandes’s 18-month loan agreement after a year [A Bola].
The Portuguese midfielder is on loan with Jose Mourinho’s side from Benfica and if he returns to his homeland in January, he might well be lining up against Arsenal.
Of course, Benfica might just loan him out to somebody else again next month.
But his stock is pretty low at the moment after being frozen out of Mourinho’s plans at Tottenham.
And maybe it’d be better for the 21-year-old’s development to stay and play regularly with his parent club, who can register him for their European squad next month.
Since joining, Gedson has managed only seven Premier League outings in close to 12 months.
