Move over Kim Kallstrom, for you might not be Arsenal’s most pointless signing of all time any longer.
Arsene Wenger brought the veteran Sweden midfielder to the Emirates Stadium on loan in January of 2014.
But Kallstrom managed only 135 minutes of football for Arsenal across all competitions, partially due to the fact that he had a broken back.
Since then, he’s been the benchmark of silly signings by the North London club, but Cedric Soares might be set to take that mantle if rumours are believed.
According to The Mirror, Soares, who joined the Gunners on a half-season loan in January, is set to leave the club.
The Portugal international, like Kallstrom, had injury problems early on but the global health crisis prevented him from making his debut, meaning that Arsenal spent £5 million on a player who hasn’t played a single second for the club.
They couldn’t have predicted the virus that would go on to sweep the globe, but they could and should have known that paying a £5 million loan fee – a figure that even surprised Southampton – for an injured player who the Saints didn’t even want is just terrible business, even more so now.
Kallstrom is so memorable if only for the fact he’s unmemorable, but the same is perhaps even truer when it comes to Soares, unfortunately.
