It looks like Liverpool might be making their first marquee signing for a while.
According to Sport in Spain, the Reds are close to bringing Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Anfield this summer.
Liverpool only signed Takumi Minamino in January, and only added youngsters Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg in terms of outfield players last summer.
So to sign somebody of Thiago’s profile is very exciting for the newly-crowned Premier League champions.
One player who might not be buzzing about the potential deal is a certain Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
That’s because Thiago, like the former Arsenal star, is a midfielder and if Oxlade-Chamberlain struggles for game time now, what’s it going to be like next season?
The 26-year-old, a £40 million signing in 2017 [The Guardian], has only managed to start 13 of Liverpool’s 32 Premier League games this season, illustrating that he is a squad player – a very talented squad player, but a squad player nonetheless.
Gini Wijnaldum, on the other hand, has started 30 out of a possible 32 league games and it seems like it’s the Dutchman who’s going to be competing with Thiago for regular football – if the Spaniard arrives – and not Oxlade-Chamberlain.
He has won a Premier League and a Champions League since leaving the Gunners but, individually, it’s been difficult for the England international to establish himself as a first-team regular.
And you do wonder if Klopp could look to offload him in the summer if this Thiago rumour is true.
