Xherdan Shaqiri’s Liverpool career appears to have fizzled out in quite a major way.
The Reds looked to have made one of the bargains of the summer two years ago after signing the former Stoke City winger for just £13 million.
Two goals against Manchester United later and the deal to bring in the Swiss star looked an even bigger bargain for Liverpool.
But the 28-year-old managed just 181 minutes of Premier League football last season, with a lack of form and fitness consigning him to a pretty anonymous second year at Anfield.
And if rumours are believed, there probably isn’t going to be a third year.
That’s because Liverpool are linked with signing even more wide players.
Takumi Minamino’s arrival in January plunged Shaqiri’s role under Jurgen Klopp into doubt, but now the German is being linked with bringing Ismaila Sarr and Ousmane Dembele to Merseyside.
Even if Klopp signs one of them over the next 12 days, Liverpool, who have already signed Diogo Jota who can also play out wide, just aren’t going to need Shaqiri any longer.
He hasn’t even made the match-day squad for a competitive game this season and it remains to be seen if he’s even still injured or simply out of the picture right now.
Either way, his time at Liverpool appears to be over – especially if a Sarr or a Dembele are added.
