If Thiago Alcantara doesn’t wind up at Anfield this summer, Liverpool fans won’t be happy.
Supporters of the Premier League champions have already seen their club miss out on Timo Werner, following months of speculation about how a switch to Jurgen Klopp’s side was probable.
There has also been months worth of exciting gossip about Thiago joining Liverpool.
But if one rumour is accurate then the Reds’ fanbase might have to prepare for another piece of devastating news.
Liverpool have refused to pay Bayern Munich’s £27 million valuation of the 29-year-old for much of the window.
But it was revealed from the start that Thiago would only be signed if Klopp lost another midfielder and, with speculation about Gini Wijnaldum joining Barcelona getting ramped up over the past two weeks, the Spain international seemed a brilliant, ready-made replacement.
That being said, now there are reports from the Netherlands [De Telegraaf] indicating that Wijnaldum has done a u-turn and expects to be offered a new contract by the club’s hierarchy and, if he signs, that could be that as far as a deal for Thiago goes.
If Liverpool were reluctant to spend the money on the former Barcelona star when it looked like they needed a Wijnaldum replacement, then it seems improbable that they’ll put their money where their mouth is when they don’t now need to replace the Dutchman.
It’s a different player but it could be another Werner-type situation for the champs.
