Kalidou Koulibaly to Newcastle United has been touted as a potential transfer this summer.

Having missed out on Diego Carlos, Newcastle will be in the market for another central defender over the coming months.

The Magpies are reportedly keen on the Napoli mountain [Calciomercato] and if Fabrizio Romano is correct, a transfer to St James’s Park could potentially have legs.

That’s because the reliable Italian journalist tweeted out this morning that the Serie A outfit were close to signing 24-year-old Brighton and Norway defender Leo Ostigard.

According to Romano, there is ‘positive feelings’ that a deal to bring Ostigard to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium will materialise and if that’s the case, it has to be a boost for Newcastle.

Kalidou Koulibaly to Newcastle United?

Koulibaly, like Ostigard, is a centre-back and it’s very likely that if the latter joins, it’ll be with a view toward replacing the Senegalese powerhouse in Italy, meaning he’ll be on the move this summer.

There are, of course, other teams interested in Koulibaly.

However, this Newcastle project is very exciting indeed and it doesn’t take an enormous amount of imagination to believe the 30-year-old would be interested in joining what Eddie Howe is building in the North East.

Koulibaly might be 30 – and turning 31 this week – but he remains an excellent centre-back and one who had a £100 million price-tag on him only last year [The Sun].

If he wasn’t still a fine defender, why would Chelsea be one of the interested parties?

They definitely represent a concern for Newcastle in this pursuit but, as mentioned, big things are happening at St James’s Park regardless of whether Koulibaly is on board or not.

And with that in mind, a transfer to Tyneside definitely has legs – and even more if Ostigard moves to Naples.
