If rumours are to be believed, Newcastle United have a cushy plan-b option if this £300 million takeover fails.

Saudi Public Investment Fund are still waiting for the Premier League to greenlight their acquisition of the Magpies.

But if it fails, The Mirror has reported that Henry Mauriss remains an interested party.

And if Mauriss winds up buying Newcastle instead of the Saudi group, it definitely doesn’t signal the end of speculation regarding Mauricio Pochettino.

According to Sky Sports, the former Tottenham Hotspur boss is the prospective owners’ first-choice option to replace Steve Bruce.

But interestingly, American billionaire Mauriss is a Spurs fan [The Daily Mail] and surely he would no doubt love to have the Argentine at St James’s Park if, hypothetically, he ends up buying the club.

Pochettino led Tottenham to a Champions League final last year and transformed the club overall – and Mauriss, being a fan of the Lilywhites, is likely to be a big fan of his.

So if the Saudi’s takeover fails, there’s no reason to believe that a deal for Pochettino would also be dead in the water.
