Newcastle United were recently linked with Dries Mertens, and despite new reports in the Italian media, the Magpies can still sign the Napoli forward in the summer transfer window.
According to FC Inter News, Newcastle are ready to make an offer to Mertens to sign him on a free transfer this summer.
The report has claimed that the Premier League club are willing to sign the Belgium international forward a two-year contract worth €7 million (£6.12m) per season net.
However, recent media reports in Italy have strongly linked Inter Milan with a move for the 33-year-old, who surpassed Diego Maradona’s goals record for Napoli in October after he scored twice against RB Salzburg in the Champions League.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, Inter have “clear advantage” in the race for the forward due to the presence of his Belgium international teammate Romelu Lukaku.
La Repubblica has also reported of Inter’s interest in the 33-year-old, but both the publications have claimed that the forward has not made a decision on his future.
It is not clear when the summer transfer window will open, but since Mertens is reportedly undecided about his future, there is still a chance that Newcastle could entice him to move to St. James’ Park and be part of a revolution.
According to Goal.com, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund are on the verge of buying Newcastle from current owner Mike Ashley.
Once the takeover goes through, the Magpies could bring in some quality players this summer despite the economic uncertainty caused by the global health crisis, and Mertens could be tempted to be part of something challenging and new.
