You could forgive Leeds United fans if they had forgotten all about Jay-Roy Grot.
The towering Dutch striker, who stands at 6’4, hasn’t made an appearance for the Elland Road club since April of 2018.
And quite a lot has changed for Leeds since then.
Not only have they changed their manager with – ahem – Marcelo Bielsa, but now they’re back in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old, who has had two season-long loans away from West Yorkshire since his last appearance, is back at the club but with his contract up next summer, it looks distinctly possible that he’ll never play for Leeds again.
Grot was linked with a move to Dijon in August [Foot Mercato] but speculation has gone a little cold on that front.
Even if he secures a third successive loan away from Elland Road, it seems impossible that he’ll prove himself to the point where the Premier League new boys offer him a new deal.
Remember, he scored only eight goals for VVV-Venlo and Vitesse from 55 league appearances during the past two seasons which, as a striker, is a pretty dire return.
And if he can’t cut it in the Eredivisie then cutting it in England’s top flight is just so far from being a realistic prospect.
Grot, who wasn’t given a squad number this season, had a handful of impressive appearances under Thomas Christiansen during the 2017-18 campaign but, at 22, he would’ve made it at Leeds by now if he was ever going to.
