Rangers have signed quite a lot of centre-backs under Steven Gerrard.

Since taking the reins a little over two years ago, Gerrard has signed Connor Goldon, Joe Worrall, Nikola Katic, Leon Balogun, Gareth McAuley and Filip Helander to name but a few.

But one central defender who Rangers could’ve signed, but elected against it, is John Souttar and what a smart move that looks like being.

In June of 2019, the Hearts centre-back was heavily linked with a £5 million move to Ibrox [The Herald].

A transfer to Glasgow never materialised and the Gers were left breathing a sigh of relief when the 23-year-old ruptured his achilles tendon against Gerrard’s side in January, after spending nine months out with the same injury just before it.

And according to BBC Sport, Souttar has suffered a similar problem yet again and heart-breakingly for him, it looks like being another stint on the sidelines.

But from Rangers’ perspective, they seemed to dodge a pretty big bullet – a £5 million transfer fee bullet – and although it’s cruel to feel thankful on the back of a player’s physical and emotional agony, those in Glasgow might be secretly relieved that they didn’t push ahead with the move.
