With two weeks to go until the Premier League season kicks off, and having just offloaded your best centre-back in the form of Toby Alderweireld, Spurs, who host Manchester City on the opening weekend, simply need to end this saga once and for all.
The Argentina international has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham from Atalanta but Fabrizio Romano didn’t offer a comforting update on Thursday.
The Italian journalist revealed via Twitter that the Lilywhites were refusing to pay the £9 million difference in the Serie A club’s £47 million asking price.
And when that’s the state of play regarding a potential Tottenham signing, it’s bad news because, as we know, Daniel Levy is as tough a negotiator as there is in English football.
But Romano may have some better news now.

If the Italian club are ‘set to sign‘ Matteo Lovato, like Romano claims, then it’s potentially big for Tottenham.
That’s because Lovato, like Romero, is a centre-back and it seems very likely that the former is being lined up to replace the North London-linked powerhouse.
Despite the haggling and the uncertainty, Atalanta are clearly expecting Romero to leave the club and with no substance to the Barcelona speculation, this is very good for the Lilywhites.
