Our view: Fabian Schar must be impressing Tottenham again

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is impressing this season.

Newcastle United aren’t exactly having a great season so far, and there have been few silver linings for fans to get excited about in the first six games.

If there is something for Newcastle fans to shout about though, it’s the continued excellence of defender Fabian Schar, who has been a solid constant in the heart of the Magpies defence.

Schar, 27, was a bargain £3million signing from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer of 2018, and looked like great value for money as he became one of Rafael Benitez’s top performers last season.

He’s continued his fine form into this season, not only defensively, but also contributing going forward, as seen with his goal against Watford and his superb strike on international duty with Switzerland.

Schar is receiving huge praise from Newcastle fans, but he isn’t going unnoticed. The Mirror reported earlier this year that Tottenham were interested in signing Schar, and he must have impressed them this season too.

Tottenham may need to find a centre back to come in next year, as Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen will both be out of contract, and Davinson Sanchez has stagnated a little of late.

Finding a player with some Premier League experience to come in and play could be vital, and Schar ticks a number of boxes for Tottenham.

He’s entering his best years, he’s confident playing out from the back but solid defensively too, and given that his contract expires in 2021, he may well fit nicely into Tottenham’s budget.

Yes, Schar lost his way a little after leaving Basel, failing to really shine with Hoffenheim and Deportivo, but that’s somewhat reminiscent of Alderweireld, who struggled at Atletico Madrid after leaving Ajax.

Alderweireld end up shining with Southampton, just as Schar has with Newcastle, before really playing the best football of his career under Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs.

That’s not to say that Schar is the next Alderweireld, but he has real quality that can bolster the Tottenham defence, and a 2020 move for him makes perfect sense if he’s continuing to impress and the situations with Alderweireld and Vertonghen aren’t resolved.
