The biggest talking point at Tottenham Hotspur throughout last season, apart from the Amazon documentary, was about Christian Eriksen’s future. The Dane spent six-and-a-half years with Spurs but, in the end, he wanted out.

Many felt that Eriksen made the right decision. Tottenham weren’t challenging for trophies, and at 27, it was time for him to leave for a different challenge. In came Inter Milan and the former Ajax man left Spurs for Italy in January.

Tottenham, at times, certainly look like they could do with a player of his quality. Eriksen was a key part of Pochettino’s squad during his highs as Spurs boss. His departure arguably made him want to leave even more but, in hindsight, he probably should have stayed.

Since joining Inter, Eriksen has started just 11 out of a possible 28 games. The Dane has scored four times and has provided three assists, which isn’t a bad record considering the number of games he has started, but he doesn’t quite look the same there.

After just nine months in Milan, it looks like Eriksen might have to find himself a new home. TMW reveal that the former Spurs man could be heading out of the door already, with German giants Borussia Dortmund reportedly keen.

A move to the Bundesliga arguably suits him a lot better than Serie A. But, considering his decision to leave Tottenham hasn’t quite worked out, he must regret it, especially with how Spurs look now.

Jose Mourinho has had an unbelievable transfer window. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon, Gareth Bale and potentially a new striker has made Tottenham a really strong side in the Premier League.

Eriksen is arguably the missing piece for Tottenham now. Mourinho and Dele Alli are having problems behind the scenes, and the Englishman might be forced out of the starting XI for some time, despite scoring in the Europa League qualifiers last night.

The number 10 spot is vacant as a result, and Eriksen could well have been the man to keep Alli further away from the side. The Dane would have loved playing alongside someone like Bale at Spurs.

The likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son finished off Eriksen’s through balls on multiple occasions. But, having a world-class forward like Bale would have brought even more joy to the Dane.

A front three of Son, Kane and Bale is among the most fearsome in the Premier League, if not in the world. Add Eriksen as the creator behind them, and Spurs could well have had a squad capable of challenging the very best. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be for the Dane, Tottenham or their fans.
