Liverpool seem to be on the cusp of signing the player who they’ve been linked to for virtually the entire summer.

Yep, Thiago seems to be well on his way to becoming a Reds player.

Sky Sports News reported on Thursday that Liverpool had finally agreed a deal with Bayern Munich to sign the 29-year-old who, according to The Mirror, could be unveiled as early as today at some point.

Early indications suggest that the club’s Director of Football Michael Edwards has pulled off a bargain, with widespread reports claiming that Thiago – who won three titles at Bayern last term, including the Champions League – will be signed for just £20 million.

But if a report from The Mirror is true, it’s an even more remarkable piece of business by Edwards.

Now it is claimed that Liverpool are only paying an up front fee of £5 million for the Spain international, with the rest being paid in installments over the course of his four-year contract.

To put that into perspective, Jurgen Klopp will have a player of Thiago’s quality and experience this season for an initial outlay of £5 million.

By signing a European champion for a very modest seven-figure fee in the short term, Edwards and Klopp should have more money to strengthen other areas of the squad before the window shuts next month.

Edwards has pulled off masterstrokes before – like signing Andy Robertson for £8 million, or selling Dominic Solanke for £20 million – but this might be his pièce de résistance.
