If rumours are believed, Liverpool’s Michael Edwards could potentially sign a major upgrade on Xherdan Shaqiri this summer.

Shaqiri has endured another low-profile season with the Reds in terms of appearances and having come close to leaving last summer, an exit this time around is a lot more likely.

And according to Marca, Liverpool are interested in signing a much better player.

The Spanish publication claims that Edwards is keen on signing Memphis Depay from Lyon.

Some Liverpool fans might not be so excited by this development in light of the fact that he was once a Manchester United player.

But it’s seven years since Depay signed for the Red Devils and the Dutch attacker is now 27 and a much more mature, rounded footballer – and one with 15 goals and nine assists for the French side this season.

He is also two years younger than his Swiss counterpart who, despite being very talented, just is not the same player who enjoyed a brilliant first season under Jurgen Klopp during the 2018-19 campaign.

Better yet, Depay wouldn’t cost a penny by virtue of the fact that his contract is set to expire in a couple of month.

He might cost Liverpool a six-figure weekly wage, but it’s also worth remembering that he’s a more reliable player than Shaqiri, who has had his fair share of injury problems since arriving at Anfield.

Depay is a better and younger player than the former Bayern Munich ace, but he’s also more reliable and if the Netherlands international winds up replacing him, it has to be considered a big upgrade.
