Arsenal have spent a good chunk of money in recent seasons.
Nicolas Pepe arrived in North London for a club-record £72 million in the summer of 2019, while they also splurged £45 million on bringing in Thomas Pepe from Atletico Madrid last month.
But you could argue that Arsenal’s best piece of transfer business in the post-Arsene Wenger era has been the £6 million signing of Gabriel Martinelli in 2018.
The 19-year-old Brazilian attacker has missed most of this year through injury but, considering Jurgen Klopp called him a talent of the century in 2019, you could argue that the youngster is going places and for £6 million, what an absolute steal.
But if Arsenal wind up signing Dominik Szoboszlai, that might be a bigger bargain than Martinelli.
That’s because Szoboszlai – only a year older than the South American – made headlines for stunning reasons again this week following his brilliant last-minute solo goal to fire Hungary to Euro 2021 on Thursday night.
For his club, Red Bull Salzburg, the 20-year-old has five goals and nine assists across all competitions this season – including another worldie in the Champions League.
And amazingly, the youngster has a £23 million release clause in his contract – peanuts even in this day and age.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal are in talks with the Austrian outfit about bringing him to the Emirates Stadium, but there’s bound to be a hell of a lot of competition.
But bottom line, if Edu signs him then it’ll be another absolute belter of a deal, relative to the price, and he could very well wind up being more valuable than Martinelli in the coming years.
