Even though Aston Villa suffered one of the worst seasons in their history when they were relegated in 2016, some gems did emerge from that infamous squad.

From the now thriving England star, Jack Grealish to the left-footed speedster in Jordan Amavi, who is now seemingly wanted by Arsenal and Leeds.

Grealish’s rise from England’s second-tier has been as remarkable as Amavi’s, who helped Marseille secure Champions League football last season – and now the latter is a wanted man in England.

French outlet L’Equipe have claimed that Arsenal have made an enquiry to sign Amavi, whilst Atheltic journalist Phil Hay has offered contradicting views coming from France that Leeds want the ex-Villa man.

Teams in Ligue 1 are in a financially difficult situation following the collapse of the big-money TV deal and those in Europe are pouncing at their talents to try and secure a bargain deal.

Whether it’s this month, or more than likely in the summer, Villa should be like a crazy shopper on Black Friday trying their best to get that bargain, and in this case, it should come in the form of Amavi.

Those in the Midlands should have the advantage if they have to push their way through for Amavi because they already have Marseille’s number after capturing Morgan Sanson.

Neil Taylor is currently the back-up to the vastly improved Matt Targett, but the Welshman’s contract runs out in the summer, and at the age of 31 with zero Premier League starts this season, the writing is on the wall.

Villa will need a replacement and Amavi is their guy.

It needs to be remembered that when Villa were relegated, the 26-year-old played up until November before injury ruled him out for the rest of that disastrous campaign.

Plus, with Villa’s expert ball-carrier weaving past players on that left flank, it would be some sight to see Amavi dancing to Grealish’s tunes and putting opposition players on their backsides.

European football is the aim for Smith’s side, and a player like Amavi would increase their chances of going on a 10-day self-isolation European tour, if they don’t reach it already this season.

From the teams linked, Leeds, more than likely, need his services because they don’t have a bonafide left-back at the club.

And the light-footed and well-balanced Amavi would thrive in a Marcelo Bielsa system if given a chance.

Either way, whether it’s Villa Park, the Emirates or Elland Road, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Amavi return.
