Our View: Conte could sign enormous upgrade on Tottenham player, he cost £135m in 2017

Speculation is mounting that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Ousmane Dembele.

The Barcelona winger has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past.

But Spurs boss Antonio Conte has reportedly identified him as a dream signing, according to Tuttomercatoweb.

If he comes in next month, it could be as Steven Bergwijn’s replacement.

The Dutchman is heavily linked with a transfer to Ajax during the January transfer window and if Dembele is his replacement then, well, what a massive upgrade.

Upgrade

Bergwijn is a good player but four goals and five assists from 42 Premier League outings indicates that the Lilywhites could and should do a lot better.

End product has been Bergwijn’s biggest problem in the two years since he joined the North Londoners.

And Dembele has an abundance of productivity, clocking up the sort of numbers you want from an attacking player.

Say what you want about his Barca stats being a little underwhelming but, after all, his injury record has been horrendous.

But he got a £135 million transfer to Spain on the back of scoring 10 goals and setting up 21 in all competitions during his last season at Borussia Dortmund – the 2016-17 campaign.

Remember, the France international is still only 24 as well and with a manager of Conte’s talents, there’s no telling how much better he could become.

There’s no getting away from his injury record at Camp Nou, but conquering his fitness problems is achieveable and if he winds up replacing Bergwijn, and staying fit, Tottenham would be upgrading in a big way.
