The Ben Davies situation at Liverpool has reportedly just become a lot stranger.

Liverpool brought in the 25-year-old from Championship side Preston North End in January.

At the time, the Reds were enduring one hell of an injury crisis, but Davies didn’t play a minute of senior football under Jurgen Klopp.

And that’s when the German manager was struggling to find a fit centre-back.

By the start of next season, Liverpool won’t have that problem.

Klopp will have Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all fit again, along with the presence of new signing Ibrahima Konate.

Oh, and Nat Phillips, a rock for Klopp toward the end of last season, may even still be on the books, too.

And yet, Davies has only gone and decided to stay and fight for his place on Merseyside.

According to The Mirror, the English defender is ‘keen’ to prove himself at Liverpool in what is quite an unbelievable development, if true.

You can’t fault Davies’s desire to earn a senior debut for the Reds because this time last year he was a Championship player and turning out for a club like this would represent something spectacular.

But you also have to be realistic and simply put, Davies isn’t going to kick a ball under Klopp next season. So many unfortunate events have to happen for the lad to even make the bench.

At 25, these are important years of Davies’s career and he won’t want to waste them on a pipe dream.

Bizarrely, he still isn’t that much closer to playing for Liverpool than when he was on Preston’s books and that should illustrate the scale of the challenge he’s facing, should he decide to stay.
