It could be an example as to why this time of the year is called silly season, but Leeds United are reportedly keen to bring Edinson Cavani to West Yorkshire.
According to ESPN Uruguay, the newly-promoted Premier League side have reached out to the 33-year-old striker’s representatives.
Cavani is a free agent after being released by Paris Saint-Germain last month and Leeds, believe it or not, seem to be genuinely in the running.
Thing is, so are Bayern Munich now and that could be bad news for the Elland Road club.
According to Le10 Sport in France, the Bundesliga giants are keen on taking Cavani to Germany, but the report adds that Bayern wouldn’t be able to meet his salary demands, which are £170,000 per week according to a report from the same publication earlier this month.
Leeds, however, might be willing to satisfy his financial needs after the player’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, said on Tuesday that the Whites could yet pull it off.
You’d think that the game was up for United in regards to Cavani as soon as a European powerhouse like the Bavarians made their interest known.
But if he can earn the same money in England, he might just take it.
After all, is he going to start ahead of Robert Lewandowski, who scored an eye-watering 51 goals last season? Absolutely not.
Joining Leeds would also probably represent his last chance to play Premier League football, to test himself in a much stronger division than Ligue 1 – and he’d play every week, despite Marcelo Bielsa’s fondness for Patrick Bamford.
And if there’s a genuine offer from West Yorkshire, it shouldn’t be ruled out just because Bayern are also reportedly keen.
