Whisper it, but it’s very possible that Arsenal could genuinely sign Georginio Wijnaldum during the January transfer window.
Arsenal have been linked with a transfer for the former Liverpool midfielder in recent weeks.
In December, Sky Sports reported that the Gunners are admirers of the Paris Saint-Germain maestro, who has seemingly failed to settle in the French capital since arriving last summer.
And based on comments by Spanish manager Mikel Arteta on Friday, Wijnaldum to the Emirates Stadium could honestly have legs.
Realistic signing
Speaking via The Guardian yesterday, the Arsenal manager highlighted his midfield struggles and confirmed that he was in the market for another player of this position in January.
Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey are absent due to the Africa Cup of Nations, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles is joining Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
With the North Londoners genuinely needing a midfielder, Wijnaldum seems like a realistic signing.
This is especially true when you consider that the Netherlands international is reportedly willing to return to England.
The former Liverpool star turned 31 in November but this remains a brilliant footballer.
In May of last year, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp described Wijnaldum – who won a Champions League and Premier League title at Anfield – as ‘sensational‘, underlining the German’s affection for him.
As far as transfers go, Arsenal could do a hell of a lot worse than somebody of the Dutchman’s ilk and in light of Arteta’s comments, don’t be surprised if speculation intensifies from here on out.
