It was reported on Tuesday that two unnamed Premier League clubs were speaking to Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum – and Arsenal might be one of them.

Wijnaldum will be leaving Liverpool this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

And although Barcelona are clearly heavily linked, two mystery clubs from England’s top flight have reached out to the Netherlands international [Sport].

And it’s very possible that Arsenal are one of them.

The Gunners have just sent Dani Ceballos back to Real Madrid and it has been reported that Granit Xhaka may also leave the Emirates Stadium too.

With Mohamed Elneny being surplus to requirements, Arsenal could be down no fewer than three midfield players and it goes without saying that Wijnaldum, on a free, would appeal to the North Londoners.

Right up Edu’s alley

The Liverpool star is 30 and we know that Edu favours cost-effective experienced signings, with Willian, David Luiz and Cedric Soares – who turns 30 in August – all joining the club within the past two years.

The other reason it may be Arsenal is because let’s face it, Wijnaldum is going to command sizeable wages and that right there eliminates most Premier League clubs from the reckoning.

With Willian looking likely to leave the Emirates, the club will save over £10 million a year in salary and although the Brazilian has flopped big time, despite being a Bosman, it wouldn’t necessarily put Edu off trying to sign another free transfer up to a big-money salary.

Nobody is saying it’s going to happen because Barca are big favourites but if Premier League clubs have sounded out the Liverpool star, it is plausible that Arsenal were one of them.
