Newcastle are reportedly looking to raid Manchester United and sign Jesse Lingard in January – for just £3million. Although cheap, it would be the transfer masterstroke that keeps the Toon in the Premier League.
Lingard, who turned 29 last month, is out of contract at Manchester United at the end of the season. Much has been made about his future, with many questioning why returned to Old Trafford – after a loan at West Ham.
During the second half of last season, England international Lingard scored nine goals in 16 games for the Hammers. He hoped it would reignite his United career – but he has started just two of his 14 outings this season.
The Daily Star report that Newcastle and West Ham are interested – but that Newcastle want him now and are ready to hand Manchester United £3million to get it done. It gives Newcastle the attacking tools to stay up.
Our View: Why Lingard keeps Newcastle in the Premier League
Newcastle need goals. While the signings of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have been praised, they still lack the goal threat that can see them outscore others. Yes, a centre-back or two is just as important.
But adding goals from other areas of the pitch, other than up front and in the form of Allan Saint-Maximin, is crucial. Lingard would give Newcastle just that, whether it be from the right, left, as a false nine or as a 10.
A front three of Wood or Callum Wilson, flanked by Saint-Maximin and Lingard is an attack deserving of a top-half Premier League side. Like Trippier and Wood, Lingard is an experienced Premier League player.
He would need no time to adapt to his surroundings and like he did at West Ham, he would hit the ground running. Newcastle signing Lingard is the deal they need to make happen, if they are to avoid relegation this season.
