Rangers pulled off a brilliant deal earlier this month.
The Gers’ Director of Football Ross Wilson signed Kemar Roofe for only £3.5 million.
Given Roofe’s experience and record in the Championship, that’s a bargain fee – but it looks even better now.
That’s because Lyndon Dykes, a striker linked to Ibrox before Roofe, has just joined QPR for £2 million.
The Australian is a talented goalscorer, but one that’s unproven outside of Scotland and paying an extra £1.5 million for Roofe is just such a better move by Rangers.
In the grand scheme of things, £1.5 million isn’t a huge amount of money in football but Wilson and Steven Gerrard have got their hands on a much better player despite the nominal increase.
After all, there’s a reason why Anderlecht spent over £7 million to sign the 27-year-old and it’s because the former Leeds star is a very accomplished goalscorer.
He scored 26 goals in his last two seasons in the Championship and in all likelyhood Dykes won’t get better that in England’s second tier.
It’s such a tough division and Roofe’s success there bodes very well for Rangers, because the Premiership arguably isn’t as difficult as the Championship.
Spending £2 million on Dykes would’ve been easy, but the light Blues have shown a bit more aptitude and picked up a stronger player for only £1.5 million more.
Due to the global health crisis, Rangers and a lot of other clubs are going to have to rely on bargains – and this definitely counts as one.
