This time three years ago, Conor Shaughnessy was bossing it at Leeds United.
The Irish centre-back was firmly in Thomas Christiansen’s plans in West Yorkshire, clocking valuable minutes in the Championship and starring in big cup wins over the likes of Burnley.
Shaughnessy managed nine appearances in the Championship for Leeds during the 2017-18 campaign, before his season was cut short by injury in January.
Fast forward to now and it’s difficult to know what’s happening with the towering utility man, who stands at 6’4.
The former Reading youth hasn’t kicked a ball for Leeds in a senior game since August of 2018, when Marcelo Bielsa took him off at half-time during a League Cup defeat by Preston North End.
Since then he has endured some loan spells in lesser divisions with Mansfield Town, Hearts and Burton Albion.
But with the domestic window closing this evening, there’s been virtually no speculation about Shaughnessy leaving on loan or permanently before it shuts.
It’s a little bit of a mystery because Bielsa clearly has no plans to use him in the Premier League, evident by the fact he wasn’t given a squad number.
If he doesn’t get a sudden move away from the club today then he’s going to be stuck at Thorp Arch until January at the earliest – and with his contract up next summer, a mutual termination might make the most sense if that is the case.
