Liverpool’s defensive crisis could go from bad to worse, if reports are true.
It is being widely reported that Joe Gomez has picked up a serious knee injury [The Daily Mail] in training on international duty with England.
The extent of the damage remains to be seen but this is the last thing that Liverpool need.
The Premier League champions also have Virgil van Dijk out for the season with a knee injury and Joel Matip has only just got back from a short spell on the sidelines, while Fabinho remains absent for now.
If Gomez is ruled out for the long-term then it’s another shocking blow for the Reds’ season.
Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted on Twitter to the injury.
There is some good news, however.
Even if Gomez is out for a while, Matip and Fabinho have proven themselves quality centre-back options and the latter – albeit a midfielder by trade – is due back after the international break.
There’s also good news in the fact that the January transfer window is only six weeks away.
But Liverpool’s success in recent years has been due to their deep squad and it’s still a huge blow if Van Dijk and Gomez are out for the season.
