Tottenham fans on Twitter lauded Antonio Rudiger’s performance as Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday in Porto.
Manchester City went into the final as firm favourites, but it was Chelsea, marshalled by Rudiger at the back, who came out as deserved winners in a nervy and high-paced all-English affair.
At the start of the season, Rudiger wasn’t even in Frank Lampard’s first-team plans, with rumours circulating that Tottenham were keen to add him to their books.
Rudiger told the Mirror that he discussed a potential move to Tottenham with Jose Mourinho, but he opted to stay in West London.
It would have been one hell of a shock if the Germany international did swap Chelsea for Spurs and he will be pretty relieved that such a move didn’t pay off given that he now has a Champions League medal around his neck.
But the Tottenham supporters, who saw their declining and defensively error-prone side finish side seventh this term, are thinking what would have been if they managed to secure his services.
Even though he was donning the blue of Chelsea, a number of fans were impressed with what they were seeing out in Portgual from the 28-year-old.
It just goes to show that sacking a manager – as Roman Abramovich did with Lampard – works, even if it seems harsh, at the time.
Daniel Levy is perhaps thinking he should have pulled the plug on Mourinho a lot quicker because leaving it days before a League Cup final was a big mistake.
Nonetheless, here is a selection of Spurs fans reacting to Rudiger’s performance in the Champions League last night:
