Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a stunning performance in the Nou Camp.
Ossie Ardiles has taken to Twitter to comment on Spurs’ stunning result in Barcelona that ensured that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Tottenham were in the driving seat heading into the final round of games on Tuesday, but needed to match Inter Milan’s result. And on paper, there is no question that the Premier League side had the tougher task with Inter hosting the group’s bottom side PSV Eindhoven while Spurs travelled to the Nou Camp.
But ultimately, Spurs got what they needed. For six minutes in the first-half, and 12 minutes towards the end, Tottenham were heading out of the competition. They fell behind after seven minutes against Barca, but were handed a reprieve as PSV took a surprise lead in San Siro shortly after.
However, Mauro Icardi was sending Spurs into the Europa League as he equalised for Inter with just 17 minutes remaining. But Pochettino’s men had the last laugh as Lucas Moura ensured that both games ended 1-1 and allowed Tottenham to take their place in the last 16.
It was a stunning performance from Spurs. Barcelona dominate possession in almost every game they play, but Tottenham had more of the ball and created some fantastic chances throughout the contest – and arguably should have won the game when Danny Rose was played in.
It was an incredibly special night in Tottenham’s recent history and one that will give them enormous confidence heading into the next stage of the competition in the new year.
But perhaps no-one summed up what the performance means to Spurs better than club legend Ardiles, who took to social media immediately after the game and again on Wednesday morning…
