Leeds United’s potential deal to sign Jerry Mbakogu is looking riskier by the week.
Mbakogu has not featured since March 10, when he suffered an injury 26 minutes into Carpi’s game with Cesena.
Despite hopes he was closing in on a return, he will now have missed out on Carpi’s last eight consecutive squads.
Leeds United reportedly have a deal lined up to sign Mbakogu in the summer.
Carpi sporting director Matteo Scala told Tuttomercatoweb in February: “The English club behaved correctly, they came to see the player and they asked us the priority for a negotiation in June, when Jerry has in the meantime completed the process for the passport.
“[They will be] first to sit at the table with us according to a gentleman agreement that we have achieved.”
The cost is expensive with Gazzamercato reporting it would cost Leeds £4.4 million to sign the Nigerian.
He had scored six goals for the Serie B side in the league before his injury.
Now he is beset by injury troubles and Leeds making a move is looking like even more of a gamble.
Fans will hope sporting director Victor Orta has the sense to back off.
