Patrick Bamford missed a glorious late chance during Leeds United’s 1-1 draw with relegation rivals Leicester City at Elland Road as one former Premier League midfielder labels the striker ‘not good enough’.

The difference could hardly have been more apparent.

Jamie Vardy cancelled out Luis Sinisterra’s 23rd minute opener with an ice-cool finish late in the second half at West Yorkshire; the veteran striker making a mockery of his six-month Premier League goal drought while proving beyond all doubt that his class remains permanent.

If only Bamford had shown such dead-eyed ruthlessness as the other end.

Pulling away to the far post, Leeds’ number nine scuffed a volley wide of target heading into stoppage time. The goal at his mercy. Two vital points slipping through Javi Gracia’s fingers.

Is this the moment Leeds supporters will look back on – at the end of May – and wonder ‘what if?’.

Patrick Bamford miss consigns Leeds United to Leicester draw

“(Leeds) haven’t been good enough all over the pitch. Tactically, defensively…,” former Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves and Portsmouth playmaker Jamie O’Hara tells talkSPORT (25 April, 10am).

“But tonight, Bamford has the opportunity to win the game. The best striker, who is on the most money. Put them chances away. That’s the problem (Leeds) have got. Not good enough.”

With his 30th birthday approaching, Bamford has scored just three goals in 24 Premier League games this season; the niggling injuries which have kept him on the sidelines for the last 18 months clearly taking their toll.

Then again, injuries or not, this was the sort of chance you would expect a centre-forward – any centre-forward – to gobble up gratefully.

“I cannot believe Patrick Bamford missed,” former Crystal Palace poacher Clinton Morrison told Sky Sports during Tuesday’s live coverage of this proverbial ‘six pointer’.

“It’s two yards out. It’s a great chance. Big opportunity for Bamford, and he’s got to score at the back post.”

Leeds remain outside of the Premier League’s relegation zone. Everton and Nottingham Forest, however, can both leapfrog the Yorkshire giants later this week.
