Director of football Victor Orta has explained the reason behind Leeds United’s decision to sign Raphinha this summer, speaking to Record.

The Brazilian moved to Elland Road from French side Stade Rennais for an initial fee in the region of £17 million (BBC). Raphinha was a star for the Red & Blacks last term as he scored eight goals and provided seven assists in all competitions in his debut season in France.

That attracted interest from clubs in the summer transfer window, with Leeds winning the race. Orta has revealed the Whites had been following the Brazilian for years, with two traits convincing them he was the one.

Orta: Raphinha is a complete player

Orta said: “We’ve been following (Raphinha) since he arrived in Portugal. He went from the lower divisions of Brazil to Guimaraes, arrived at Sporting and returned to succeeding, just like at Rennes.

“This sustained growth made us insist on the signing. He incorporates talent and a great physical level, making him a complete player.”

Raphinha is certainly a fantastic talent. The Brazilian, still only 23, has a lot of time to develop and, under Marcelo Bielsa, will have the opportunity to learn everything he will need to have a successful career.

It’s early days, however. The former Sporting Lisbon man has yet to start a game for Leeds. He has come off the bench three times in the Premier League so far.

Raphinha will hope to get his first start with his new club this weekend against Arsenal. Leeds, meanwhile, will look to return to winning ways following back-to-back defeats.

If the Brazilian can help his side get one over the Gunners, he will become an instant hero.
