Early days, but Leeds United might have a brilliant transfer lined up for January already.
According to The Daily Mail, Leeds are growing confident about signing Espanyol gem Mateo Joseph Fernandez.
And if the Whites’ director of football Victor Orta does pull it off, it has to be considered a cracking piece of business.
Potential bargain incoming
This could be an absolute bargain for the Elland Road club.
Fernandez is out of contract with the Spanish side next summer and therefore Leeds hope to pick him up for less than his release clause.
And that clause is only £1.2 million [The Daily Mail], which is peanuts for a club that spent 20 times that amount on signing Daniel James on transfer deadline day in August.
Another reason why this could be such a coup for the West Yorkshire club is because of who’s involved.
According to the same report, Manchester City and Barcelona are also keen but Leeds appear to be winning the race nonetheless.
And if United beat two European titans to a signing then it’s a reminder of the club’s growing profile under Orta and Marcelo Bielsa.
Fernandez, it must be noted, is only on the cusp of turning 18 and therefore isn’t a senior player just yet.
But by virtue of Barca and Manchester City’s interest, he is one heck of a talent and the idea of Orta picking him up for about £1 million quid means this could be a proper steal by Leeds.
