According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, Liverpool are strongly interested in signing Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.
Interestingly, Ornstein adds that the 73-cap Austria international will be joining a new club on July 1st.
Alaba’s contract with the Bundesliga and Champions League winners is running out, and will expire in June.
As Ornstein states, the defender will not be putting pen to paper on a new deal, nor will he be sold in the January transfer window.
As a result, it very much seems like the Austrian will run his contract down at the Allianz Arena before starting a new challenge in the summer.
Manchester United and Manchester City are also strongly interested in the 28-year-old, who is arguably among Europe’s best in his position.
However, Ornstein states that Alaba’s long-term preference was to move to Spain.

If Liverpool could get this deal over the line, then a couple of Jurgen Klopp’s problems would be solved.
Firstly, the German’s lack of depth at centre-back would be eased by Alaba’s arrival, as that is the Bayern Munich man’s main position.
However, he can also operate at left-back, which would provide cover for Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
There could be one stumbling block, however.

Alaba is only in this current situation because he refused Bayern Munich’s offer to raise his wages to just under £290,000-a-week.
The Athletic state that he and his representatives were holding out for £400,000-a-week for five years.
Seeing as Liverpool’s top earner is Mohamed Salah on £200,000-a-week, matching those demands might be an issue, in our view.
