The Hornets player impressed at Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf and is in the Belgium Under-21s squad for the upcoming European Championships.
Watford striker Dodi Lukebakio has enjoyed a superb season on loan at German club Fortuna Dusseldorf which has been rewarded by being named in Belgium’s squad for the European Under-21 Championships (Watford Observer).
The 21-year-old weighed in with an impressive 10 goals and four assists in the Bundesliga, including a hat-trick against Bayern Munich, plus a further four goals and one assists in the German Cup (Transfermarkt) in what was a fruitful season for player and club.
Dusseldorf finished 10th in the Bundesliga table and made it to the last 16 of the cup thanks in no small part to Lukebakio’s contributions, and with the transfer window now open, he is believed to be on the radar of several clubs.
According to the Watford Observer, Lille coach Christophe Galtier confirmed that reports linking the Ligue 1 side with the player were correct, but stressed Lukebakio was one of four options under consideration.
Lukebakio, meanwhile, told Foot Mercato: “I do not know what will happen, I do not know where I am personally. All I know is that there are a lot of interested clubs.”
Given how impressive a season the striker has had, his young age, the fact he is now in line to appear at an international tournament and his contract at Watford taking him to 2022, Watford really ought to give him a chance to prove what he can do – after all, 15 minutes of competitive action is not really enough (Transfermarkt).
Belgium’s U21s start their Euro 2019 campaign against Poland on Sunday, June 16, face Spain three days later on June 19 before ending their group matches against hosts Italy on Saturday, June 22.
