Rangers signed two strikers last summer – and now look set to bring in another two attackers this summer.

The Gers landed Kemar Roofe from Anderlecht and Cedric Itten from St Gallen, bolstering Steven Gerrard’s striking options.

With Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe also at the club, Rangers have been able to carry four dangerous strikers this season – and they have combined for 41 goals across all competitions this season.

Remarkably, Rangers are now pushing for not one but two more striker signings in something of a surprise double swoop.

The Daily Record claim that Oostende’s Fashion Sakala is on the verge of signing a four-year deal having hit 13 goals this season.

TEAMtalk have added that Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga – who is set to for free leave this summer four years since a £15million move to Teesside – is close to agreeing terms with Rangers.

One departure is expected in Jermain Defoe, given that his contract expires this summer, and is now 38, so an extension is very unlikely.

That still leaves five strikers in the mix if the two deals go through; Morelos, Roofe, Itten, Sakala and Assombalonga.

There is some versatility offered by Roofe and Sakala given that they can play out wide or up front, but going for two strikers right now does seem a little strange.

Do Rangers know something we don’t? Maybe they fear that Morelos will be on the move this summer, and are moving quickly to bring in bargain strikers just in case he does leave.

Given that Gerrard largely plays with one striker in a 4-3-3 system, so five into one doesn’t go – and that’s why you would expect either Sakala or Assombalonga to join, rather than both.
