Liverpool suffered a major blow to their Premier League title hopes after a 1-0 loss away to Leicester City, who were smashed 6-3 by Manchester City just two days earlier.
Ademola Lookman’s sole goal of the evening capped off a night to forget for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Reds were toothless at the King Power Stadium and looked like a shadow of the side that have looked like a force for most of this season.
Mohamed Salah has a first-half penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel, with the Egyptian missing the rebound with a poor header. Yet out of all the Liverpool players, it was Joel Matip who impressed the most against Leicester.
The Cameroonian international, who was one of Jurgen Klopp’s earliest signings for Liverpool, has been in solid form this campaign and has partnered Virgil van Dijk in the defence with impressive results.
Even with Liverpool losing last night, Matip was a force in the backline as well as in the attack, with the formed Bundesliga star routinely adventuring up the pitch to cause Leicester problems.
Whilst the Reds failed to pick up a point, supporters on social media were left impressed by Matip’s display for Liverpool following their bitter loss to Leicester.
With City now six points clear at the top of the table, the Premier League title race looks to be pulling away from both Liverpool and Chelsea.
