Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka missed out on the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament on Tuesday and fans have offered their thoughts.
Even though Switzerland were knocked out of the quarter-final stages, they caused the biggest upset of the competition by knocking out the champions, France.
Xhaka won Man of the Match during that penalty shootout victory, as the Arsenal man produced one of the strongest performances of his career.
But following the conclusion of the Euro 2020 final on Sunday, UEFA named the Team of the Tournament.
Denmark’s midfield aggressor, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was one of three midfielders selected, alongside Jorginho, who won the tournament with Italy and Spain’s wonderkid, Pedri.
There are some supporters who felt that Xhaka was unlucky to miss out and the £30 million man (Sky Sports) should have been selected, alongside a Paul Pogba, who despite France’s early exit was brilliant in midfield.
Well, Xhaka may have missed out on that final XI, but he has no doubt boosted his reputation during this tournament.
He is a marmite-like figure in North London and with rumours that he could leave for Roma, this tournament has perhaps boosted his price tag.
Given that he is still on Arsenal’s books, if he does leave, then it will be interesting to see if those in the Emirates boardroom look for an extra few million after his strong Euro 2020 campaign.
