One year since previous links, should Leeds reignite Waghorn interest?

Leeds United were linked with a move for Martyn Waghorn in March 2017, but did not sign the forward in the summer.

It is looking increasingly likely that Paul Heckingbottom will have to put a new striker near the very top of his shopping list for the summer with Leeds’ top goalscorer in the league only at Elland Road on loan, while the other cluster of forwards available to Heckingbottom have not exactly been staking the best claim to grasp the number one position in the pecking order for next season.

If Andrea Radrizzani gives Heckingbottom and Victor Orta a decent budget to work with, Leeds should arguably be looking at two established strikers to improve their chances of sustaining a promotion charge for the entire campaign.

And perhaps one of the names that they should consider is a striker that they were linked with one year ago as Radrizzani geared up for his first summer in sole charge of the club.

The Daily Mail reported in March 2017 that Leeds were amongst a host of clubs chasing then-Rangers forward Martyn Waghorn as he continued to impress at Ibrox.

Ultimately it would be Ipswich Town who would sign Waghorn, and the Tractor Boys will undoubtedly be delighted that they did win the race as the 28-year-old has been a brilliant signing.

The forward has scored 12 times and contributed eight assists for Ipswich, and has demonstrated plenty of versatility with the various types of goals that he has scored.

He may not be the marquee name that Leeds fans would prefer to see arrive this summer, but he has a track record in the Championship. One of the major criticisms of Orta’s recruitment policy is his lack of signings who boast Championship experience, so the fact that he ticks that box should make Waghorn a tempting option.

Ipswich will be reluctant to sell, but Leeds should certainly try their luck as his form since the initial interest was reported has been incredibly impressive.
