Reece Oxford came close to joining Rangers from Premier League giants West Ham United last January.

Its almost a year since one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League came close to signing for Rangers.
The Sun claimed in January 2016 that The Ibrox giants were hoping to bring West Ham United’s teen sensation Reece Oxford to the blue half of Glasgow. But Oxford, who made his Premier League debut at the age of just 16 and put in a masterful performance in a 2-0 win at Arsenal, joined Championship side Reading instead.

And the career of arguably West Ham’s most exciting youngster in years has stalled since then. Oxford barely featured for Reading and hasn’t had much more luck since joining Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach on a two-year loan in the summer.
The Sun is now going as far as to state that West Ham could be willing to cut ties with the 18-year-old as soon as January. It is understood that David Moyes will not stand in his way with a £6 million permanent move to Gladbach on the cards – despite Oxford playing just one minute of league football for the Bundesliga giants this season.
But while Rangers would surely jump at the chance to revive Oxford’s career, he is surely now far too expensive for Graeme Murty’s side to harbour any realistic hopes about renewing their interest.

The England youth star could thrive at Ibrox with plenty of highly-rated youngsters emerging in the first-team and interim boss Murty happy to give youth a chance. In contrast to his lack of opportunities in Gladbach, Oxford could’ve been a star of Rangers’ starting XI.
But even if £6 million is seen as a minuscule fee for a player with Oxford’s potential, a Rangers side without cash to burn seem to have no chance of making another approach 12 months on.
