One transfer Rangers still need before the deadline – Jamie Walker is the ideal signing

Rangers have added nine new signings this summer – but could there still be more?

Rangers have enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer market, with manager Pedro Caixinha backed with nine new faces to spark his Ibrox revolution.

The Gers have brought in Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Ryan Jack, Carlos Pena, Graham Dorrans, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera, revamping their side ahead of the new season.

However, even after Rangers kick off their league season against Motherwell this weekend, there will still be time for manager Caixinha to bring in new signings ahead of the transfer deadline later this month.

One major area stands out that needs attention, and that’s out wide. Barrie McKay’s departure to Nottingham Forest means that Rangers lack a winger with a proven record in Scottish football, and the Gers may look to rectify that.

Daniel Candeias has shown some promise out wide, but Benfica loanee Dalcio is a complete gamble, and a move to snap up Hearts star Jamie Walker has to be the priority before the transfer deadline.

Walker, 24, smashed 15 goals in all competitions last season, and as reported by BBC Sport, Rangers have failed with two bids to sign him this summer. Yet, with Hearts manager Ian Cathro sacked and the club admitting that Walker’s head has been turned, there is still a chance that Rangers can land their man.

Elsewhere, Rangers look steady enough. Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick provide a strong battle between the sticks, whilst Alves and Cardoso strengthen the centre back ranks alongside Danny Wilson and David Bates, with Rob Kiernan sold to Southend United today.

Another full back may be needed, as whilst James Tavernier and Lee Wallace are the clear starters, Lee Hodson is the prime cover for both positions, with Myles Beerman still a little too inexperienced to be counted upon regularly at left back.

Midfield is where Rangers look fairly strong; new additions Jack, Pena and Dorrans bring real quality to the side, whilst Niko Kranjcar and Josh Windass have caught the eye in pre-season, with another midfielder surely only set to be targeted if a player like Jason Holt departs, which seems unlikely.

In attack, Caixinha has Kenny Miller, Martyn Waghorn, Herrera and Morelos at his disposal, and a new signing there may also only be pursued if a player – in this case Waghorn – leaves Ibrox in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Right now, it appears that Rangers may only need one more signing to cap off their summer spending, and Hearts star Walker is the perfect man to take the summer arrival to ten, having excelled in Scottish football in recent years, and any other additions may only come if players are moved on this month.
