Former Manchester United academy product Angel Gomes has claimed on his Instagram story that snubbed Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has been ‘the best number 10’ in the Premier League during the last decade.

Mikel Arteta opted against including Ozil in his 25-man Premier League squad and it’s understandable that a highly-rated playmaker like Gomes, who plays in a similar role to the German star, appreciates him so much.

Given the news of Ozil’s recent omission, it seemed as though Gomes, who moved to Lille this summer after rejecting a new contract at Old Trafford, felt the need to praise the World Cup winner.

He simply wrote on his Instagram story: ‘The best No.10 in the last decade’ added with fire emojis.

Whilst there’s no doubting Ozil’s ability, the manner in which these last few seasons have panned out for him doesn’t help his cause in being provided with that above tag.

Someone like Kevin de Bruyne, who has played fewer games, may feel he has done enough during the last decade to claim that crown of the best number 10 – he has the Premier League titles to prove it.

But perhaps looking closer to Manchester City, it’s David Silva who has been the best player in that position during the last decade.

Either way, even with Ozil’s recent downfall, he still deserves to be in that conversation, but recent events don’t exactly help his cause.

As for Gomes, he will be hoping to emulate the above players, as the 20-year-old wonderkid is hoping his current loan spell at Portuguese side Boavista from Lille helps elevate his game to the next level.
