The Premier League’s top clubs will be sending talent to the World Cup, and not just with England, as players from around the globe travel to play in the world’s biggest tournament. The World Cup is not only an opportunity to watch countries face off against each other, but it can also act as a shop window for many players who can showcase their talents on the biggest stage of all.
Arsenal will have their eyes on a number of players, having signed both Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud after they had featured at the European Championships in 2012. This time, manager Arsene Wenger will be scouring the tournament for a new striker, and his perfect option could be the man to halt England’s progress.
Uruguay will rely heavily on Luis Suarez, but his partner in crime Edinson Cavani has recently been linked with Arsenal and could be open to a move to the Emirates Stadium. Cavani, 26, is reportedly unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain as he plays second-fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and may seek a transfer despite only moving to France for £50m last summer.
The huge signing of Mesut Ozil has paid dividends for Arsenal, who currently sit top of the Premier League, and they may be tempted to spend big again if the right player is available. Cavani’s incredible record of 104 goals in 138 games for Napoli caught the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs and bringing him to North London would represent a huge coup for the Gunners.
Rumours of Cavani’s exit from PSG continue to gather pace, and whilst no fee has been mentioned, Arsenal may have to yet again break their transfer record after paying £42.5m for Ozil. Cavani will be hot property if he does decide to leave the French capital, and an impressive World Cup would only intensify the battle for his services – so Wenger may have to move quickly if he is to bag his man.
Cavani will look to torment Arsenal players such as Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere and potentially Kieran Gibbs in the group stages of the World Cup, and it’s almost a given that those players would rather have him on their team than have to face him.
