Everton may be looking to splash the cash this summer.
Everton splashed the cash on a raft of signings last summer, and whilst that didn’t bring them success, more new faces could arrive this summer.
The Toffees went big on new signings almost a year ago, as Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen and Wayne Rooney were all brought in, but Everton have endured a disappointing season.
Everton even broke their club transfer record last summer, splashing £45million (The Guardian) on Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, and the way fees are going in the Premier League, it would be little surprise to see them break it again this summer.
There are a number of positions where Everton need to strengthen, and if Everton are going to break their transfer record again this summer, then it must be on another centre back.
Keane hasn’t lived up to expectations, whilst both Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka are ageing, meaning a top centre back is needed – and Everton should return for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Everton wanted to sign Koulibaly back in 2016, with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri admitting to talkSPORT that he pushed for a big-money deal, but couldn’t quite justify paying £60million.
Koulibaly may cost a similar fee now, but with The Mirror reporting that he could seek a move to England, Everton must throw money at the Senegal international in a bid to finally lure him to Goodison Park.
Koulibaly’s blend of pace, strength, anticipation and technical ability make him the complete package at centre back, and would give Everton their own lynchpin after Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk.
Being unable to offer European football would be a blow, but Moshiri has the funds to throw at Koulibaly – and if the Toffees are to break their transfer record on anybody this summer, it should be Koulibaly.
