Pundit Tony Cascarino has criticised Cuco Martina’s performance for Everton against Tottenham.

The defender struggled in the 4-0 defeat playing at left-back, and was certainly not the only Everton player to under perform.

Cascarino questioned Sam Allardyce selecting Gylfi Sigurdsson in front of him, but said Martina’s display was particularly poor.

He told The Times: “The club paid £45 million for Gylfi Sigurdsson so Allardyce feels he has to fit him into the side, with Wayne Rooney in the centre.

“But the Iceland midfielder gave absolutely no protection to Cuco Martina, pictured, on the left-hand side. That said, Martina’s display was one of the poorest I’ve seen by a left back in a long time.”

In fairness to Martina, left-back is not his natural position, and in recent weeks he has proved a useful player for the Toffees.

It is though clear that he should not be the long term answer at Everton and is only filling in as a stop gap at left-back until Leighton Baines returns.

Premier Injuries report Baines has no set return date as he looks to come back from a lower leg injury, so Everton may be stuck with Martina in the starting line-up for a little while yet.
