Tottenham Hotspur loanee, Bryan Gil, has posted on Instagram that Valencia’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Betis was ‘one of the toughest days of my short career’.
Whilst there was a fairytale story to the Copa del Rey final, with Betis legend, Joaquin, lifting the crown at the age of 40, it was heartbreak for his former side.
Gil, who moved to Valencia in January on a season-long loan from Spurs, came onto the bench in the 85th minute, with the tie going to extra-time and then penalties.
The 21-year-old didn’t take a spot-kick during the shootout, and instead, watched teenager Yunus Musah miss his spot-kick and Juan Miranda score the decisive penalty for Betis.
Understandably so, it was an emotional evening for Gil, as he sent this message to supporters.
“Possibly one of the toughest days of my short career,” said Gil. “It’s frustrating to work towards a goal and not achieve it.
“But I couldn’t be more proud to belong to this ground and defend this trophy.
“Thanks to all those people who lived it with us in La Cartuja and those who lived it from home. Once again, this hobby never ceases to amaze me. We’ll come back stronger.”
Gil’s first season in the Premier League was indifferent for the versatile forward, with the Spanish star signed up by Nuno Espirito Santo last summer.
In truth, it was perhaps harsh that he didn’t earn more game time in north London because he only played 86 minutes of football in the Premier League – and this was for a Spurs side that were struggling, at the time.
Nuno didn’t use him as much as he should have, even though he was the one who brought him to the club.
Whilst Antonio Conte allowed him to leave the club during the January transfer window, and instead, brought in his own player in Dejan Dejan Kulusevski, who has started like a house on fire.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Gil next season and whether Conte keeps him on board, or allows him to leave on loan again because there will be some Spurs fans who will feel he now deserves that chance.
