Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Newcastle’s move for Alexander Isak this week.
The Swedish striker joined Newcastle on Friday, and this was a move that accelerated very quickly after initial reports of the Magpies renewing their interest on Wednesday, and according to Bailey, there is a reason this deal moved so quickly.
Indeed, the Tyneside club wanted Isak signed up as soon as possible due to the fact Callum Wilson is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury that could keep him out for the foreseeable future.
Newcastle wanted Isak through the door so he could quickly fill Wilson’s shoes, and they managed to get the Swede signed in time so he may play a part against Wolves on Sunday.
What’s been said?
Bailey was discussing Isak’s arrival at St James’ Park.
“It improves their squad no end, and it helps with the Callum Wilson injury problems. That’s one of the reasons they’ve wanted it done for Sunday because Wilson has a hamstring injury, which is unfortunate for him because he’s started the season brilliantly,” Bailey said.
Every point counts
Newcastle getting Isak in as soon as Wilson was sidelined may well be a difference-maker this season in terms of where they finish.
Yes, we’re only a few games into the season, but every point counts when you’re harbouring ambitions of European qualification.
With all due respect, Newcastle wouldn’t be anywhere near as threatening going forward if they had to start Chris Wood up front for their next two games, and signing Isak may well prove to earn Newcastle some points during this period.
Even at this stage, every single point is valuable, and despite Wilson’s injury, Newcastle should be at close to full strength for their next two games.
