Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been praising Arsenal fans after their treatment of William Saliba at the weekend.
The French defender played just his second Premier League game for Arsenal on Saturday against Leicester, and unfortunately, things didn’t quite go to plan.
Indeed, the centre-half scored an own goal on his second Premier League appearance, and while Saliba would have been down after his mistake, the crowd made sure to get behind him.
After his own goal, Arsenal fans would cheer and clap every time Saliba touched the ball, and Wright was very impressed by the fans’ reactions.
What’s been said?
The pundit discussed how the fans treated Saliba.
“It was one of the most wonderful things I’ve seen for a long time I saw at the weekend in that stadium. When he scored the own goal, the reaction of the fans, the ovation everytime he touched the ball afterwards was the kind of thing where if I’m playing you’d be thinking you’re loving this. He did not put a foot wrong in this game,” Wright said.
Positivity in the air
A few years ago it would’ve been impossible to imagine Arsenal fans actively cheering a player who scored an own goal, but now, there’s so much positivity in the air in north London.
Arsenal’s fanbase are no longer one of the most pessimistic in the Premier League. They’re buying into Mikel Arteta’s project and while results may not have been amazing over the past few years, it feels as though something big is building.
The players seem happier and the fans are certainly happier.
Arsenal are in a much better place than they have been as of late.
