Reading midfielder Charlie Adam has admitted that he would find it all-but impossible to turn down a return to Rangers if the Glasgow giants came calling, speaking to BBC’s The Nine podcast.
A former Scotland international may be 34 these days but he is still going strong in the second tier of English football.
Adam has put a couple of disastrous years at Stoke City behind him since getting his career back on track at the Madejski, shining as the creative fulcrum of a Reading side who have pulled clear of the relegation zone since Mark Bowen took over from Jose Gomez.
And while few are expecting Rangers to offer their an ageing academy graduate a second spell at Ibrox, Steven Gerrard does have a history when it comes to re-signing former players.
Allan McGregor and Steven Davis have been a huge presence both on and off the pitch during the Gerrard era, while Kyle Lafferty also made an emotional if short-lived homecoming in the summer of 2018.
So Adam can harbour some hope of returning to where it all began before he hangs up his boots.
“Listen, Rangers is a special place. Great club, great support,” says a man with unfinished business at Ibrox.
“If that opportunity ever came around you could never turn it down. Rangers are one of the biggest clubs in Europe.”
With Celtic securing a ninth successive Scottish Premiership title on a points-per-game basis recently, Gerrard and co will be absolutely desperate to put a potentially title-winning squad in place at Ibrox this summer.
Rangers have one more year to stop their bitter Old Firm rivals from making history.
And Adam, with his vast experience and fine passing range, could prove to be an inspired addition to a Gers side who have often struggled to control games since the turn of the year.
